A vibration through the steering wheel or seat at motorway speed is one of the most common complaints we hear — and one of the most misunderstood. It is rarely "just the road". An out-of-balance wheel spins thousands of times per minute, and even a few grams of uneven weight distribution translate into a rhythmic wobble that you feel through the whole car. Left alone, it wears your tyres unevenly, hammers your wheel bearings and suspension, and makes every long drive tiring. At The Wheel Lab in Alaquàs, near Valencia, we balance wheels to a precise standard on a calibrated dynamic balancer and, just as importantly, diagnose where the vibration is genuinely coming from.

For drivers new to the Valencia area — particularly expats running imported cars on Spanish roads for the first time — a vibration that appeared after a tyre change, a kerb strike, or a long motorway run is exactly the kind of thing we sort out quickly and transparently, in plain English.

What Wheel Balancing Actually Does

No tyre and wheel assembly is perfectly uniform. There are always tiny differences in weight around the circumference and across the width of the wheel. Balancing corrects this by spinning the assembly on a dynamic balancer, measuring exactly where the heavy spots are, and attaching small counterweights in the precise positions needed to even everything out.

There are two things we correct:

  • Static imbalance — a heavy spot around the circumference that makes the wheel "hop", felt as an up-and-down bounce
  • Dynamic imbalance — uneven weight across the width of the wheel that makes it "shimmy" side to side, felt as a wobble that gets worse with speed

A dynamic balancer corrects both at once, which is why a proper balance feels so much smoother than a quick static-only job.

Signs Your Wheels Need Balancing

Steering Wheel Shake

A wobble through the wheel that appears around 80–120 km/h and often eases off again at higher speed — the classic sign of a front-wheel imbalance.

Seat or Floor Vibration

A buzz felt through the seat or floor rather than the steering — usually points to a rear-wheel imbalance.

Uneven Tyre Wear

Patchy or "cupped" wear across the tread is a tell-tale sign that wheels have been running out of balance for some time.

After a Tyre Change

A new vibration right after fitting tyres almost always means the assembly was not balanced — or was balanced poorly.

After a Kerb or Pothole Hit

An impact can shift a weight or bend a rim. A fresh vibration after a hard knock needs checking promptly.

Lost Wheel Weight

If a stick-on or clip-on weight has fallen off, the wheel is now unbalanced and will vibrate until it is re-checked.

Vibration Is Not Always the Balance

This is where honest diagnosis matters. Plenty of workshops simply re-balance a wheel, hand it back, and charge you — even when the real cause lies elsewhere. A vibration can come from a bent rim, a tyre with internal belt damage, a worn wheel bearing, a seized brake, or worn suspension components. Re-balancing will not fix any of those, and you would be paying for a service that does not solve your problem.

What balancing fixes

  • Uneven weight distribution in the wheel and tyre assembly
  • Vibration that scales smoothly with road speed
  • Wobble that started after a tyre change or lost weight
  • Steering or seat shimmer in an otherwise sound car

What balancing will NOT fix

  • A bent or buckled rim (needs straightening or repair)
  • Internal tyre belt or structural damage
  • Worn or failing wheel bearings
  • Brake-related vibration felt mainly when braking
  • Worn suspension or steering components

Because we are a wheel restoration lab, we can also fix the underlying cause when it turns out to be the rim itself. If your vibration is down to a bent wheel, we can straighten and repair it rather than just sending you away — see our alloy wheel repair service.

Our Diagnosis-First Approach

Before we just bolt weights on, we work out what is really happening:

  • We ask you exactly when and how the vibration appears — speed, braking, cornering
  • We inspect the wheel for rim runout, damage, and lost or mis-placed weights
  • We check the tyre for visible bulges, flat spots, and irregular wear
  • We balance on a calibrated dynamic balancer and confirm the result
  • If the cause is not the balance, we tell you honestly what is — we will not charge you for a service that does not solve your problem

How We Balance Your Wheels

From diagnosis to a smooth, vibration-free result.

1

Listen & Inspect

We confirm the symptoms and visually inspect each wheel and tyre for obvious causes.

2

Mount on Balancer

The wheel is centred accurately on the dynamic balancer using a cone or flange plate.

3

Spin & Measure

The balancer spins the assembly and pinpoints the heavy spots, static and dynamic.

4

Apply Weights

Counterweights are fitted in the exact positions and amounts the balancer calls for.

5

Re-Spin to Confirm

We spin again to verify the assembly now reads within tolerance — no guesswork.

6

Report & Refit

We refit the wheel, set pressures, and tell you if anything else needs attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

A balance issue typically appears as a vibration that grows with speed, often peaking around 90–110 km/h, and is steady when cruising. Vibration that only appears when braking points to the brakes; vibration that gets worse when cornering can point to bearings or suspension. We diagnose before we charge, so you only pay for the work that actually solves the problem.
Always when new tyres are fitted, and any time you feel a new vibration. It is also worth re-checking after a significant kerb or pothole strike, or if you notice a wheel weight has fallen off. There is no fixed mileage interval, but balancing is cheap insurance against uneven tyre wear and suspension stress.
Yes, and this is a common reason people come to us. A poor balance, a bent rim, or an undiagnosed cause can leave the vibration in place. We re-diagnose from scratch, check the rim for runout and the tyre for internal damage, and balance properly — and if the real cause is the wheel itself, we can repair it here.
Yes. Tyre-pressure monitoring sensors do not prevent balancing — we simply account for them. If a sensor needs attention while the wheel is off, we will tell you before doing anything that adds to the cost.
Of course. We work with many international and expat drivers in the Valencia area. Message us on WhatsApp in English with your car details and a description of the vibration, and we will give you a clear, free quote before you visit.
