Diamond cut alloy wheels are found on many premium and mid-range vehicles sold in Spain and across Europe. The process creates a distinctive two-tone effect: a bright, machined aluminium face contrasting with a painted barrel. When that finish begins to corrode, peel, or lose clarity — a common occurrence in the Valencia climate — only a proper CNC re-cut can restore it faithfully.

At The Wheel Lab, we run a dedicated CNC diamond cut lathe operated by experienced technicians. Whether you have a set of BMW M-Sport rims, Audi split-spokes, or aftermarket wheels that have seen better days, our process returns them to a condition indistinguishable from new.

What Is Diamond Cutting?

Diamond cutting — also called CNC turning or torno diamantado — is a subtractive machining process. The wheel is mounted on a precision CNC lathe which removes a thin layer (typically 0.3–0.8 mm) of aluminium from the face of the wheel using a polycrystalline diamond-tipped cutting tool. The result is a flawless, highly reflective surface that reflects light in the same way as the original factory machining.

Because the process physically removes material, it can only be performed a limited number of times on any given wheel (usually two to three times across a wheel's lifetime before the face becomes too thin). This is why it is essential to use a specialist laboratory with calibrated equipment and experienced operators — not a general bodyshop.

Is Diamond Cutting Right for Your Wheels?

Diamond cut restoration is the correct repair when:

  • The lacquer on the machined face is peeling, bubbling, or lifting
  • Corrosion or oxidation pitting is visible on the bright face
  • The wheel originally left the factory with a diamond cut finish (check your vehicle handbook or OEM wheel code)
  • Kerb damage or light scoring has compromised the polished face

If your wheels are a solid colour with no machined face, you likely need robotic painting instead. Not sure? Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will advise within the hour.

Our Diamond Cut Process — Step by Step

Every wheel goes through a documented, quality-controlled workflow.

1

Intake & Assessment

We inspect the wheel for cracks, structural damage, and material thickness before any work begins.

2

Strip & Blast

Old lacquer and any paint is chemically stripped. The barrel is shot-blasted clean to bare metal.

3

CNC Diamond Cut

The wheel face is machined on our CNC lathe using a diamond-tipped tool to precise tolerances.

4

Barrel Preparation

The barrel is primed and painted in the original or a customer-specified colour.

5

Lacquer & Cure

The entire wheel — face and barrel — is coated in UV-resistant clear lacquer and oven-cured for durability.

6

Quality Control

Final visual and dimensional inspection. No wheel leaves without passing our internal QC checklist.

Turnaround Time

Standard diamond cut restoration at The Wheel Lab takes 3 to 5 working days for a set of four wheels. Single-wheel urgent repairs can sometimes be completed in 48 hours — contact us to check current availability.

We understand that being without your vehicle is inconvenient. We work efficiently without ever cutting corners, and we will give you a firm completion date when you drop off your wheels.

Why Choose a Dedicated Wheel Lab?

Diamond cutting is a precision machining process. A CNC lathe for alloy wheels is a significant capital investment, and operating it correctly requires ongoing training. Many general bodyshops offer "diamond cut" as a service but subcontract the work out or use inferior single-pass techniques.

At The Wheel Lab, the lathe is in-house. Our operators work exclusively with wheels every day. That specialisation shows in the finish quality — particularly in the consistency of the machining pattern across the entire face and the clarity of the lacquered surface once cured.

Caring for Your Diamond Cut Wheels After Restoration

  • Use a pH-neutral wheel cleaner — avoid acid-based or alkaline cleaners
  • Do not use abrasive brushes or wire tools on the machined face
  • Rinse off brake dust promptly, especially in summer — it is mildly acidic
  • Apply a ceramic or wax coating periodically to the lacquered face
  • Avoid automated car washes with stiff brushes for the first 30 days post-restoration

Pricing

Diamond cut restoration starts from €85 per wheel, subject to wheel size and condition. A full set of four standard 18" wheels typically falls in the €360–€420 range. We provide a fixed quote before any work begins — no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you diamond cut any alloy wheel?

Most cast aluminium alloy wheels can be diamond cut, provided they were originally machined at the factory. Forged wheels, one-piece chrome wheels, and wheels with insufficient material thickness remaining may not be suitable. We assess every wheel individually at no charge.

How many times can a wheel be diamond cut?

Industry guidance suggests a maximum of two to three CNC cuts per wheel, as each pass removes material. Beyond that, the face becomes dangerously thin. We measure material thickness before cutting and will advise honestly if a wheel has already been cut too many times.

Do I need to remove my tyres?

Yes. For CNC diamond cutting, the tyre must be removed. We can handle tyre removal and refitting at an additional cost, or you can drop off bare wheels if you prefer.

Can you match the original barrel colour exactly?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. We use OEM paint codes where available and can colour-match from a physical sample or RAL/NCS reference. If you have the OEM code from your vehicle's documentation, bring it along.

I am based outside Valencia — can I ship my wheels?

Absolutely. We regularly receive wheels from clients across Spain and occasionally from overseas. We recommend a tracked courier service for wheel shipping. Contact us and we will advise on suitable packaging to prevent transit damage.

Do you offer a warranty on diamond cut restoration?

We guarantee our workmanship. If a defect attributable to our process appears within 12 months under normal use and proper care, we will rectify it at no charge. This does not cover damage from kerbs, chemicals, or improper cleaning.
